Andante from Symphony No. 5 - Tchaikovsky

by Deryn Cullen - Cello

/

about

An excerpt from the slow movement of Tchaikovsky's magnificent 5th symphony arranged for cello quintet.

Tchaikovsky composed his 5th symphony between May and August 1888. It was first performed in St Petersburg at the Hall of Nobility on November 6 of that year with the composer himself conducting.

Despite some critics (including Tchaikovsky) disliking some aspects of the symphony, particularly the ending which was described as crude, the symphony has gone on to become one of the composer's most popular works. The second movement, in particular, (from which this excerpt has been taken) is considered to be classic Tchaikovsky: well crafted, colorfully orchestrated, and with a memorable melody for solo horn
